L E T T E R from Jac – Life As A Mandala

The CEO of Patagonia has stepped down, and her very lovely goodbye note was, “I’ve been thinking a lot about sand mandalas. In the Tibetan ritual, a group of practitioners create an intricate geometric universe of colored sand, a road map to enlightenment, for those developed spiritually enough to read the signposts and symbols. It can take many monks days to create on bended knees with prayerful chants.  After two decades of studying Buddhism, I think of my life as a mandala. Who and what I invite into the mandala is always a matter of personal creation. We all create our universes whether intentionally or by default, in either case we are creators”.

What a beautiful sentiment, to think of our lives as mandalas. On my last trip to India, a sand mandala was created every day, and swept away at the end of each evening. Reminding us of the impermanence of life. Some sand mandala’s can take up to a week to create, exquisite and always, always removed on completion. Viewing our lives as a mandala, a beautiful creation, that will ultimately be swept away, can help bring us clarity as to what we bring in, and what we leave out.
