A School for Creativity, Consciousness and Clarity

Our mission is to help people make progressive ongoing change for the better in their lives. The Broad Place are moving upstream against the current trends of quicker, faster, watered down meditation. We don’t believe in band aids. We believe in meditation that actually works, get results and that people can fit into their modern lives, every day. We've taught students from aged 5 through to their 90's. With the correct training, any person, with any kind of lifestyle can practice Integrated Meditation with success to gain more clarity, enhance their creativity and be less stressed, anxious and fatigued and more engaged, dynamic and resilient.

The Technique

All meditation comes from India, and was originally created for enlightenment, and although all meditation is good, it has not been created equal, or with the same benefits. For the modern mind and life, not all meditation is easy. We hear too often ‘oh I tried it and can’t meditate’. We counter, ‘you simply haven’t learnt the right technique yet’.

The technique of meditation taught and practiced at The Broad Place is called INTEGRATED MEDITATION (IM). This involves meditation AND an ongoing education program. We combine these two things, as Vedic Meditation can definitely stand alone, but when coupled with ongoing education, wisdom, techniques and tools, life starts to really be enhanced!!

Vedic Meditation comes from an ancient body of knowledge called the Veda. It is a technique of mantra based meditation that can be done anywhere, anytime, for 10-20 minutes twice a day, and once learnt by students, can be practiced for life without the need for anything else. No strained pretzel positions,  no belief systems, no apps, no trying to 'control the monkey mind'. A simple technique that was designed for busy people with busy minds, not for ashrams and monasteries. Once learnt in person with one of our teachers, you can do it anywhere on your own. So simple!

We call when we sit for Integrated Meditation the IaM Session; where we are a human BEing and not a human DOing for short moments in our days. Small investments so that we can better engage with life. As we sit for our IaM Sessions daily, we find ourselves more creative and gaining more clarity. Our consciousness and awareness expands. Our brains and nervous system moving out of fight-flight and start repairing. We begin to gain insights and understand ourselves better.

So Integrated Meditation honours this process by combining the simple meditation technique with education and support. We have created a brilliant online education program to further enhance creativity, understand stress and anxiety, and engage in the world with tools and techniques for graceful high grade living.

We couple the meditation technique with our brilliant ONLINE EDUCATION PROGRAM where you’ll come to discover ancient wisdom for modern living, study neuroscience,  learn yoga sequences and tools and techniques for increasing your productivity and understanding compassion and gratitude. Integrated Meditation is the program that provides you with what you need to create lasting change.

With 2x 20 minute IaM Meditation Sessions you are investing just under  3% of your day to engage better with the other 97%.
Add on a 15-20 minute knowledge session or reading or yoga from our Integrated Meditation Program, and you are now investing 4% of your day, to seriously enhance the other 96%.

Rounding

One of the key Advanced Practices to Vedic Meditation is a sequence called Rounding. Rounding bookends  our regular Vedic Meditation practice with a gentle yoga sequence (no previous yoga experience required), a balanced breathing practice and then a brief rest. It deeply cleanses the body of fatigue and stress, and creates a profound sense of calm. It takes 50 minutes on average, and we have created a step by step video tutorial on how to learn Rounding that you can view as many times as you like. We are committed to sharing this practice with as many meditators as we can, and are so proud to offer this to our Integrated Meditation Students.

Conscious Contribution

"I shut my eyes in order to see" Paul Gaugain
For us this epitomises meditation; shutting the eyes to gain clarity, and know oneself deeper, to self realise. And for every student that learns meditation with The Broad Place, we donate to the Fred Hollows Foundation and restore the eyesight a blind person  in Australia's indigenous community. You close your eyes, so someone else can see...

There has been a large amount of research into the neuroplasticity of the human brain, current neuroscience is now saying that our brains are totally changeable-like soft plastic. As we repeat behaviour we not only change ourselves on an mental level but also physiologically. Studies have shown the grey matter, responsible for memory, learning and abstract thinking is much larger and has faster response times in meditators.

THE INVESTMENT

Meditation has an uneasy history with money that isn’t all that surprising: why would a practice that concerns itself with higher spiritual experience dirty its hands with money? The answer is three-fold. The first reason is the most fundamental. We’ve all got mouths to feed and it’s a simple reality that you can’t dedicate your life to something without drawing an income from somewhere. Secondly, especially in western capitalist societies, money exists as a proxy for effort. Our experience at The Broad Place is that when students make a financial commitment, they are far more inclined to follow that effort and stick with the teachings, thereby experiencing the rewards. Perhaps it is a simple human trait: we tend to recognise value when we pay for it.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, The Broad Place charges for meditation courses, and our other offerings, because they have real value. Our teachings are not self-indulgence. They make life tangibly better for our students and those around them. There is a reason I established The Broad Place as a community and an organisation rather than operating under my name. My intention was to create an education platform where people can learn creativity, consciousness and clarity as a practical curriculum; practices and teachings to inspire and bring joy, existing independently from personal influence. I am resolutely opposed to ‘followers’ and cults of personality. At The Broad Place you pay for an outcome-based education in ancient techniques for modern living.

FAQs

How Is Integrated Meditation Different to A Guided Meditation?

There are many types of meditation, so we know it can get confusing. Guided meditations (like Headspace and Mindfulness Meditations) are wonderful, they turn on the parasympathetic nervous system and get the body out of fight flight and into rest and digest. Integrated Meditation is a foundation of Vedic Meditation which is a mantra based practice designed for the mind to transcend naturally past thought. In this way, it's very different. We're activating the parasympathetic nervous system, AND down the deep restore and repair on the body needed for lasting change. Guided meditations are like tidying the house, and moving things around so they look neat. It feels good after. Integrated Meditation is like a huge house clean, and you really notice the difference.

I Have Never Meditated With Success Before, How Will I Know I Can Actually Do This

Like nearly all our students, none have meditated with ease before, and some have never even closed their eyes unless it was to go to bed! All of our student graduate our course meditating with success.  Even the ones who have come to us and said they have tried everything for 20+ years and still feel they're not getting it. So we can confidently say you will be able to do this. 100% say they would recommend the course to a friend. You can see what some of our students have said about the course and their practice ongoing HERE too.

I Can't Sit Cross Legged and I Can't Stop Thoughts! Can I Still Learn?

Absolutely! This practice is about being comfortable, it's very simple and elegant. We sit with our back supported and sit however feels good for each student. Most sit in a chair, on the lounge, or parked in their own car. There's no pretzel positions and aching backs with Integrated Meditation.
Likewise with the concept of banishing thoughts. Think of your mind as a choppy sea, and the mantra like an anchor that helps you settle down amongst that. The concept of trying to banish thoughts is futile. What we do with Integrated Meditation is allow the mind to gently move beyond thought with the assistance of the mantra. It's easy and with the correct tuition, anyone can learn with us with ease.

I Love To Enjoy A Few Drinks and I Eat Red Meat, Can I Still Learn and Practice?

We love this question as we get it all the time. It's a meditation technique, not a religion, you can do whatever you please with your life!

Why Would I Pay For Meditation? Shouldn't It Be Free?

Meditation has an uneasy history with money that isn’t all that surprising: why would a practice that concerns itself with higher spiritual experience dirty its hands with money? The answer is three-fold. The first reason is the most fundamental. We’ve all got mouths to feed and it’s a simple reality that you can’t dedicate your life to something without drawing an income from somewhere. What Does Vedic Mean Anyway? And Why Do You Call It Integrated Meditation As An Overarching Name?

The Veda is a body of knowledge that comes from India, and our meditation technique stems from this. All meditation comes from India, and was originally created for enlightenment, and although all meditation is good, it has not been created equal, or with the same benefits. Vedic meditation is a mantra based technique, very effortless and gentle, and really easy to do once learnt correctly.

It wasn't designed  for ashrams and monasteries, and was meant to be integrated into our daily lives. The integration part is what we specialiase in.

The Vedic meditation technique can stand alone absolutely. However, when combined with a little extra knowledge, inspiration, tools and techniques, we have witnessed over the years just how much more enhanced a students life can be. And we live ourselves as founders of The Broad Place and meditation teachers, highly engaged, modern lives. And there's limited time in which to sift through all the information out there and put it to use. So we created Integrated Meditation to do just that - to teach meditation and compliment this with life enhancing practical wisdom.

Why Can't This The Meditation Component Be Taught Online?

Put simply, nothing beats an in person learning experience. For thousands of years meditation has been taught in person and we follow this tradition. We have seen first hand over so many years the benefit of in person education and we continue to teach in this way. The meditation course is taught in 4 simple sessions of 90 minutes each consecutively over 4 days. Then be layer in our Enhanced Education Modules, and these are taught online, so our students can engage with them at their leisure, and re-sit them at any time.

I Am Not Keen On Group Experiences! Is This For Me?

That's ok, and we offer Private Courses in a one on one setting also, you can email us info@thebroadplace.com.au and we can chat to you about organising this.

We would like to mention though that your'e not sharing the inner workings of your soul in our meditation course! You're listening, putting it in to practice and asking questions as you need to ensure you have all that you need. We take care of everything, and there's no need to contribute anything within the course if you don't wish.

I Am Results Driven, How Long Until I See Results?

Good, so we are! From the very first session you will begin to see results and shifts and changes. Everyone tracks differently, but everyone notices within the course changes and these continue with your daily practice.

What Exactly Does The Course Fee Include?

The course fee includes the in person tuition in meditation, the ability to resit the group course at anytime. Additionally it includes all our Enhanced Education Modules, you will learn Rounding through video tuition, and have access to our IaM Vault with recordings, lectures and more! As an Integrated Meditation student you will also be able to join our Weekly Online Recharge Sessions, and will have free access to our monthly Gatherings, an interview series on creativity, clarity and consciousness, group meditation and social gathering.

As business owners, it can be extremely stressful when dealing with outside influences, whilst trying to make the right decisions.  We felt that at times things were completely out of control, which would send us into a whirlwind. For us finding Jacqui  at The Broad Place has been a blessing, an investment that gave us the tools to think with more clarity, and the ability to distinguish the things that were really important, from those things that were not so important.  Prior to learning Vedic meditation and the Vedic principals, everything had to be done by yesterday, late nights were just the norm, and spending time exercising and looking after our health, slid down the priority list by virtue that we just didn’t have the time. All this has now changed.  We highly recommend Jacqui  from The Broad Place to anyone looking to invest in their personal journey, to find that inner beingthat we didn’t know existed, that allows you to grow, and tap into something that is truly life changing. We can’t thank Jacqui enough and look forward to our continued learnings and personal growth.

Rebecca Anthony

"I feel compelled to recommend ‘The Broad Place’ due to the profound affect the learnt daily practice, has had on my lifestyle and wellbeing. I discovered ‘The Broad Place’ during an incredibly stressful time in my life. I had just become a solo parent.  My world was one of panic and despair. Stricken with grief, my family and friends were there with open arms to help. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much they could do for the severe state of panic I was in.

When I attended the introductory talk, I was both bemused and intrigued by Jacqui's audacity to sell nothing. There were no books, no app and no educational materials. Nothing tangible was being offered in the transaction. I went away in a state of refusal to hand over money for nothing.

Nearly a year later, I was still in the same frame of mind.  I felt like I'd tried everything available, except sedating myself with the stream of prescriptions so freely handed out. I had continued with interest to read Jacqui's online posts, and decided to take the course. It's been a year now, I practise daily and I'm still very much a beginner. I still have anxiety and I'm still slightly traumatised. But now I have the tools to escape. I have the tools within me to release this pressure daily.

I don't need an app, my phone doesn't need charging. There's no voice telling me what to do, feel or think. There's no book to reference or a need for silence. It's a space I create within myself to feel better, calmer and more focused daily.

Jacqui has simplified the practice of meditation, adapting an ancient technique to the chaotic lifestyle we live today.  She educates with humour and realness. The course is a nourishing delightful experience, highly recommended."

Margie Fry

"The Broad Place Meditation course is unique in a small intimate group we were guided through each step by Jac. I loved the opening sacred offering ceremony that connects us to this ancient meditation technique. This created a gentle authenticity and validated the knowledge and its truth. I could listen to Jac all day her soothing tone , fun up lifting story telling makes connecting to the meditation and its values very easy. Jac is so knowledgeable, creative, warm and engaging. I am looking forward to expanding on my practice and being part of The Broad Place tribe."

Sarah Hogan Melbourne Vedic Meditation Student

I wanted to drop you a note to sincerely thank you for the Vedic meditation weekend course.  I have been practicing twice daily and have already felt significant difference in my life.  I had hesitated for a while because of the cost involved but am now wishing I had done it earlier.  Your presentation style is very approachable and I particularly valued how you taught us to use this ancient wisdom in the real world.  The stories you used to illustrate your point were great, making it easy to apply the knowledge to my own life. I’m also grateful for the ability to stay in touch and look forward to attending another course next time you are in Melbourne!

Jacqueline Alwill Founder of Brown Paper Nutrition

"Jacqui's teaching in vedic meditation has fundamentally impacted the way I approach my life. Having meditated for years, but not been as diligent as I had hoped most recently, I undertook Jacqui's vedic meditation course at The Broad Place. Honestly, it has been the most incredible thing I have done for myself, business and life overall in recent years. Through Jacqui's teaching and my daily practice, I have become far better equipped to approach everything in my life with greater focus and clarity. I cannot speak highly enough for Jacqui's teaching, guidance and ongoing support"

Mary Raleigh

"I have been meditating on and off for 5+ years and nothing has made me feel so good, so quickly as learning VM with Jacqui. Within the first day I felt more optimistic and when I went back to work on Monday within an hour of arriving, one person had already asked me "What happened this weekend? You seem different. Very energetic!" Of course it's only been three days, so I'm getting a bit ahead of myself but I can tell VM is different just by the way it is taught. Jacqui truly gets what a day in the life is like, no matter your profession or lifestyle. She gets it and creatively helps each of us feel like meditation can effortlessly be part of our daily lives. I'm confident I can make VM a part of my daily life and am already convinced that the 3% of my day I spend meditation will meaningfully impact the other 97% of my day. I'm excited to see what's ahead!"

Phil Gartland

"I was certainly a sceptic of the art of meditation, not to mention my likely resilience to persist with a meditation practice on an ongoing basis. And as a typical self conscious  "bloke", I was concerned about telling people I meditated or worse still the thought of meditating in public and someone seeing me!

I overcome these initial reservations, starting with a meditation app. It quickly dawned on me that using my iPhone, the chief culprit for some if not all of my anxiety, was totally counter-intuitive to a sustainable form of mental relaxation. I was recommended to Jacqui at The Broad Place by a client. From the moment I walked into her tranquil Paddington studio, I felt very relaxed . I also immediately warmed to Jacqui as a person.

Within 15 mins of my course I was meditating and I vividly remembering how nice that first meditation was. The course was set at the perfect tone by Jacqui, with simple explanations of the mind body connection, the process of what is happening during the practice and pragmatic tips on how to adapt this age-old art into hectic modern day life.

The calmness and clarity I felt walking out of the studio over the courses evenings was profound. I remember the vividness of the colours, the sharpness of the smell of summer foliage and of wet Tarmac. I felt present for the first time in a long time and from that moment on was hooked.

Two years later and I still meditate religiously, despite a more than hectic work and home life. I have found it has helped me in so many ways, from being far more decisive, more patient, far less anxious and more calm/less angry."

Julie Haslam Marketing & Events Consultant

Earlier this year I became very unwell due to an autoimmune disease. As part of my recovery, I decided to learn Vedic Meditation under the guidance of Jacqui Lewis. Through her progressive, thought-provoking and passionate approach to teaching I was provided the skills to live a more stress-free, mindful life. As a former believer of “meditation is for hippies”, I now practise meditation regularly and truly believe I am calmer, more tolerant and more efficient. Although I take 40 minutes out of my day to meditate, I get this back in productivity, ideas and clarity. I am incredibly grateful to Jacqui for helping me to see things differently and for encouraging me to stick with it. I would highly recommend anyone who wishes to adopt conscious living to at the very least meet Jacqui – her passion and enthusiasm for what she does will captivate you.

Liana Cornell

“The Broad Place has changed my life in a deeply profound way. I am endlessly grateful for all that this modality has offered to me so far and am looking forward to continuing along this ever-deepening journey.  Jacqui is a brilliant teacher and I cannot recommend this course highly enough. If you are looking to change your life in a magical way, then I highly recommend this course.”

Emily L’Ami Founder of Bodha

“Thank-you so much for sharing Vedic meditation with me. The course was such a lovely experience and just like when I found ‘my yoga’ after years of dabbling in different styles I feel like i’ve finally found a meditation style that clicks for me. It’s part of my life now and I’m so grateful”

Ashley Neese

"I had been a student and teacher of meditation for years before I signed up for the course with The Broad Place. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure Vedic meditation was going to be that powerful as I already had many tools and studied with masters like Thich Nhat Hanh and Jack Kornfield. All I knew was that I was called to The Broad Place training and at the encouragement of my friends that took the course, I decided to show up with an open mind.

Jacqui is a phenomenal teacher and has an engaging way of sharing the practice, she was warm and welcoming but also full of vitality. I’ve been to many meditation trainings over the course of the last fourteen years and this was by far one of the most interesting and useful. I left feeling like I had a very practical tool to incorporate right away and have been devoted to practicing twice a day ever since. What I love about The Broad Place is that they are creating an authentic community that I now have access to any time. What I love about the Vedic meditation they taught me is I now have a practice I enjoy doing and on the days when it’s challenging I know it will shift. I am very grateful to Jacqui and The Broad Place for taking these ancient teachings and making them accessible tools for modern living."

Jo Stone

"I came to the meditation course with no real idea of what it entailed. I found your approach to be very authentic and sincere. What I loved is that you know that we are all flawed humans and that sometimes life gets in the way of the practice. But you gave us techniques to cope with that. It really was a lifetime gift that you bestowed upon me, an extra tool in the toolkit to navigate the frantic pace of the life we live. Personally I really admire your resolve to follow the life path that you have chosen and your ability to experience so much and share it with others."
