L E T T E R from Jac – What Does Meaning Our Best Mean?

I think we all use the language ‘just do your best’ a lot when going through something challenging. Sometimes it’s ‘well I am sure they meant their best’ and is actually at times making excuses. Sometimes our best is kicking some serious goals, being energised and completely aligned and feeling exhilarated with the day. Sometimes doing our best is just scrabbling to make sense of a situation. Or getting out of bed and getting as much of the day done as we can without falling apart, like an omelette splitting apart as it slides out of a pan.

‘Our best’ is going to change minute to minute. We shouldn’t use this term to hold ourselves to a standard higher than what we can achieve in any moment. We should use doing our best as a present moment awareness technique. What in this very moment, does doing my best look like? Is it saying a gentle no? Is it applying myself a bit more? Is it that inch more discipline? Or giving myself a rest?

Rather than run off old data and patterns of what might have worked, we have to engage in the here and now and adjust to be in flow in that moment, treating each as the unique opportunity it is.
