L E T T E R from Jac – Zen Wednesday; Creating Space for Mushin

Mushin’ is a Japanese term referring to no-mind. It’s embraced in martial arts, meditation and various creative arts. Mushin is present when the flow of activity is completely free-flowing, present, it’s when the mind is like a stream and you are completely absorbed.

In the age of distraction, we are losing our ability to create mushin for ourselves. Everything pinging away, pulling at us. The 10,000 things is a Buddhist term referring to the things that pull at us, it’s the entire world, and I feel more than ever the 10,000 things is really jamming us up! Arran and I have been working to a system of dedicated times of creativity and focus. I prefer 60 and 90-minute slots, Arran does half days. Within that time there are no phone calls, no emails not related to the project at hand, no social media. Just completely focused time to do brilliant work. We turn our phones on silent and we go for it. We are able to reach a flow state so fast now after working like this. It has increased our creativity, our productivity and overall contentment with the work we do sooo much.
