‘We join spokes together in a wheel,
but it is the centre hole
that makes the wagon move.
We shape clay into a pot,
but it is the emptiness inside
that holds whatever we want.
We hammer wood for a house,
but it is the inner space
that makes it liable.
We work with being,
but non-being is what we use.’
Verse 11 Tao Te Ching
I adore this verse within the Tao Te Ching. It is the space that creates everything. And if we live a life with too much overflowing, every moment filled, we lose our true being. Meditation is the practice of emptying out, of working with non-being. If you felt like last year was too pushed, too frantic, get a daily meditation practice established. Learn with a brilliant teacher who can continue to guide you. And apply yourself to the art of non-being so that in the day, your being is vibrant.
