I mean is this not a brilliant quote? I have this little pocket book of notes from Pema Chodron, and I fold it open to a random page many days, to see what it will have for me. As I sat to write to you, this was it. Ram Dass said to me when I was asking about being a teacher ‘don’t believe your roles, they’re not real’. It really stuck with me. How many roles and characters we all play. It’s like a hectic Broadway play where we play every character one after the other and are completely spent at the end of each day. But it doesn’t need to be like that. They’re just prisms of our personality. We’re actually not ‘that person that works there’ more than we are ‘daughter to that mum’ or ‘fun friend to so and so’ or ‘enemy of blah blah’. We are actually a soul, playing the roles of being a person. And we forget it’s a game, and that we’re supposed to not take it so seriously.
Let’s catch ourselves when we are wrapt by our own make-believe, wearing our hats too tightly, and busy being ‘us’. Let’s peel it back, and discover who lies beneath all of that.
Written with love,
