My homeland of Australia is in a turbulent time. It’s not unique to Australia, many, many countries are in a turbulent time. It brings out the best in people, and also at times, the worst. It’s the heat of a deeply challenging situation that drives a frenzy of emotions. We can become quick to believe our handling of the situation is ‘the right way’, that our noble intentions are the only path through. We can become pregnant with expectations for amazing results from our actions that sometimes don’t go the way we thought, which brings with it more irrational emotions.
Within these challenges, it can feel to begin to easily turn off, to shut down. It’s not going how we thought, no one is working ‘with us’ how we want, there’s too much opposition, so why continue? It’s tempting to not want to feel anything, as there’s simply too much to be felt. But part of being human is to feel it all. To use the turbulence as a time in which to find our inner equilibrium and what we might actually be capable of. A path through this is to take on Pema’s advice, ‘We learn that what truly heals is gratitude and tenderness’.
