Talking Broadly – Jocelyn Petroni

I had heard and read about Jocelyn Petroni and her incredible facials so many times and the praise for her skill was always incredible. But I simply wasn’t a facial girl, I was (note past tense) a massage girl if I wanted a spot of indulgence. And here lies the difference. Jocelyn’s facials aren’t just indulgence, I now view them as necessity.

I was having some weird hormonal things going on and my skin was shocking, for the first time in 20 years. So on the strict advice of one friend,  I made an appointment to see Jocelyn. And my god do you wait, this is one popular woman. So after an agonisingly months long wait, I walked up some rickety stairs and into a very quaint and sweet waiting room.  I sipped on my coconut water that her assistant had supplied me and then entered the tiny bombshell that is Jocelyn. Seriously, Jocelyn looks so healthy and her skin so incredible that you would follow any instruction even if to look 1/5 of how great she looks.

Swept into the main treatment room I was taken back with how high the ceilings were, how vast the space. Beauty rooms are usually poky little things, but not here. Lying on the insanely comfortable bed, propped up by lots of pillows and covered in a feathered quilt, Jocelyn firmly got to work with classical music echoing around the space. I actually thought to myself ‘this is heaven’. The facial was wonderful, she was honest in her assessment, and I absolutely trusted her judgement. My skin literally glowed afterwards. No weird post facial redness, I actually looked like a peach.

By this stage, I would have handed over my credit card and bought anything. And this is what I loved the most, no up sell. I mean I was literally itching to buy everything. And she finally gave in, and recommended some Vitamin A serum. And I snuck in some Sodashi  when I was back in the waiting room. None of the normal ‘you need this and that and this’ and you walk out bewildered with cream blurring your eyes. This was instead a stylish, sophisticated setting, with a few quality treatments on offer. And that’s that. Not every treatment under the sun. Because Jocelyn is a specialist, and I really respect that. Her treatments are not cheap, I won’t lie to you, but I consider it an investment in ensuring my face looks it’s best now and for the years to come.

And so given how freaking hard she is to get into, I ensured I’m booked in every 6 weeks this year, and my skin, is looking better and better.

Tell us more about Jocelyn Petroni.
When did you launch, and what drove you to start this business? I started my business 8 years ago because I loved working as a beauty therapist but wanted to set my own treatment standard.

What has been the biggest challenge with Jocelyn Petroni and the greatest success?
My biggest challenge is time management and allowing myself to have personal time. I love my work and I am a perfectionist so I need time frames or I would keep perfecting forever. My greatest success is that my work genuinely brings me happiness and joy.

What do you do to stay healthy, and live a balanced lifestyle?
I eat well and I exercise and meditate every day. I love banana smoothies and running Bondi to Bronte.

How do you approach meditation?
I get up early and sit for about an hour before my day begins, otherwise it would never fit into my schedule. I follow Tibetan Buddhism so my practice is quite specific and passed down from my teacher, Sogyal Rinpoche.

What does a typical day look like for you?
I get up about 5:30am, meditate for 45mins and walk to 6:30am yoga at Body Mind Life in Surry Hills, home by 8am and work starts at 9am. I do Facials in the salon or I’m manicuring for a shoot on location – either way I work with fabulous clients. If I work late it’s Japanese for dinner (I’m around the corner from Zushi and I am currently addicted to the tuna tataki) or if I have time to cook I usually make a salad or soup. I love eating out with friends or family a few times a week and drinking delicious red wine.

What do you do daily that is non negotiable?
Look after my skin. I love my shower and bathing ritual which always includes using luxe body oils and homemade oil blends.

How do you define creativity?
Breaking the daily mould and doing something different

What brings you the most joy in your life?
Buddhism (plus family and fashion)

What do you define as happiness?
My happiness is love and sharing this with people.

What do you consider your greatest achievement to be?
I will never forget the day my Mum told me she felt I was the most successful of her children. My siblings are all pretty smart and my Mum does not sing my praises so it meant alot to me (I hope my siblings don’t read this).

What qualities do you seek in people?
Honesty, Loyalty, Compassion and Hard working

What is a saying or motto you live by or that is relevant to you right now?
‘You are what you think. All that you are arises from your thoughts. With your thoughts you make the world. Think and act with a pure mind and happiness will follow’ The Buddha.
