L E T T E R from Jac – A Spiritual Hurricane Lamp

Anne Morrow Lindbergh writes in her beautiful book Gift From the Sea, “I want in fact – to borrow from the language of the saints – to live “in grace” as much of the time as possible. I am not using this term in a strictly theological sense. By grace I mean an inner harmony, essentially spiritual, which can be translated into an outward harmony.

We have all likely invested much time trying to create outer harmony, ripe with distractions and ever changing landscapes, neglecting our much needed inner harmony. Until a crisis hits. Then when face to face with no exterior to micromanage in isolation, and just a mind to wrangle, we come to terms with the need for inner harmony.

Having been through a lot of crisis in my life, I have spent over two decades learning about working towards an inner harmony. I felt equipped to deal with all that life has thrown at our family the last 5 weeks, yet in the heat of the crisis there were some very dark moments that tested me. I could retain a sense of humour mostly, and trusted mostly and didn’t lose complete faith it would all work out. But there were truly trying times. The thing that I noticed was my bounce back rate was extremely fast. And that’s why I invest so much energy into spiritual practices. They don’t grant you immunity to life’s truly awful parts, that’s unavoidable, but they do gift you an incredible response system of recovery. David Whyte calls this a ’spiritual hurricane lamp’. Methods for finding your way in life’s darker moments.

Consider, what lights your spiritual hurricane lamp?
