I personally dislike the constant messaging in the self-development and entrepreneurial spaces of rise and grind. Of own the day. Of you can be anything. It’s too big. It doesn’t take into account the sequencing of every element of our lives that brought us to today. Or every little thing that occurred within and outside of our control to bring to us this moment.
It creates an impossible dream that if you simply ‘own the day’ it won’t own you, and you ultimately can be a success. Just by reading an inspirational quote.
There’s more to it than that. Obviously. But it’s easy to ignore the obvious, and feel shame that we aren’t more than we are on any given day.
Every day is a new opportunity absolutely. But it’s the small decisions that will make a difference ongoing. Meditating each day. Especially when you don’t feel like it. Exercising and moving our body when we don’t feel in the mood. Making the decision to eat better, and making the decision to relax in a moment and eat what you like. Spending a moment in nature. Not doing more than one thing at a time. Giving ourselves that extra moment of space between activities. Not kidding ourselves that we can do it all. Saying no to all the things that don’t matter, don’t count and that we really don’t want to do but feel we ‘should’, the imagined stuff.
Every day we can become grounded instead of grinding. We can leave the driving and pushing and shame around ideas we should be this immensely important successful person behind. We can simply be curious and creative. We can smile. We can find the humour in it. We can trust. We can love. We can be grateful for all that is. It’s a choice though, and we have to follow through on it for it to be ours.
