If you ever find yourself knee-deep in self-righteousness (Coo-ee!) or complaining/whining/elegantly demonstrating the shortcomings of others, situations or experiences (who me? looks over shoulder) this is the antidote. The good news is that you are the boss, the bad news is that you are the boss. Hang on – I have the power (Yass!) and yet the buck stops with me (hey, sometimes I like to be the 2IC – [second in command]). This wisdom from Maya Angelou guarantees that I get out of my own way and take control of my life again – whether I like it or not.
It is active, I have to make a choice or decision and back it up. It does not allow me to dwell in the cul-de-sac where quite frankly with some things I could hang out there for a while – going round and round the same path, too easy to do especially if my spectators change.
What I absolutely love about this nugget of insight is that on the surface it looks like you can take the Pollyanna route – happy regardless of the situation, I’ll pretend I like it, pretend it’s all okay and keep going. Big mistake, guess what pops back up – the fact that I DON’T LIKE IT! You can not hide from this.
I have to choose a way out and that’s when the magic happens because it forces me to create a new boundary – what I’m genuinely prepared to be okay with and what I will move toward or away from – this is exciting because it gives me clarity not just for today but for the future.
I’d like to invite you to use Maya’s wisdom to empower you to make a choice that truly reflects who you are today and that supports who you are becoming.
Love Jo xxx
