L E T T E R – The Old Creative Paradigm

I love it when slightly delusional ‘creative’ people or artists claim they don’t need order, they fly by the seat of their pants, and sometimes work all night, and never sleep the same schedule, and never, under any circumstances follow routine, as it inhibits their creativity. I am yet to find an example of someone for whom this works without having a massive cost to that individuals life, happiness or the output of their creative expression.

The truth of it is that we are simply conduits for creativity, it is not coming from us, but through us.

We are simply a channel for creative expression.

So if we have the channel clear, and we are orderly, we can channel more creativity. We wish to be disciplined yet open to spontaneity, full of form yet open to be melded, regular in our rituals so that the vibrancy of life can live through us.

The old ideas of creative people being sloppy and all over the place, slightly crazy and yet ‘oh so artistic’ are outdated and are a hangover from a period that involved excessive drug and alcohol use. A framework that involves employing simple circadian rhythms, nourishing the body, nurturing ones soul, and keeping a disciplined and regular schedule – is going to open the channel of creativity right up. The output of that work may well be something violent, chaotic and utterly original, but one depends on the cohesion of the two together.
